Segment-09 (2000) for computer-generated sounds
Duration: 5:17
Instrumentation Details:
Computer-generated Sounds
Program Note:
Segment-09, a computer-generated landscape, was composed in the fall of 2000
in the Electronic Music Studios at the University of Iowa. The sound material used in this piece is derived from three
distinct sound events: 1) a harpsichord cluster-chord; 2) the sound of water dripping; and 3) a high-pitched synthesized
sound event. The development of the material in this piece is based on a cause and effect relationship where each isolated
event is a direct result of the previous musical action. The title reflects the composer’s desire to reject all
extra-musical influences during the creation of this piece—musical questions led to musical answers. The process of naming
the piece ended at the ninth incarnation, thus the title Segment-09.
